Study debunks myth that baby rattlesnakes are more dangerous

Researchers at Loma Linda University have overturned the long-held belief that young rattlesnakes pose a greater threat than adults. A new study shows that adult snakes typically deliver far more venom in bites.

The research, published last week in the journal Toxins, found that baby rattlesnakes can control venom release just as adults do. Adult snakes carry and inject larger amounts of venom, leading to more severe symptoms in victims.

William Hayes, professor of biology at Loma Linda University School of Medicine and lead researcher, said the myth has caused misinformed risk-taking, unwarranted fear among victims, and inappropriate medical care. He stressed that any rattlesnake bite remains a medical emergency requiring immediate attention and antivenom.

The study traced the misconception to at least 1967, with much of the spread coming from inaccurate media reports and quotes from non-experts. A survey showed 53 percent of Southern California students and 73 percent of emergency responders and healthcare professionals still believe the claim.

Researchers noted that rattlesnakes play a key role in ecosystems, though populations have declined in many U.S. areas. They called for better public education to correct the misinformation.
