Nazi-looted painting found in Mar del Plata

A DAIA report confirmed that Giacomo Ceruti’s “Retrato de una dama,” looted by Nazis in 1940, had been kept in a Mar del Plata residence.

The painting belonged to Jacques Goudstikker’s collection until it was expropriated in July 1940. Friedrich Kadgien, an official in the Reich Finance Ministry, acquired it and took it to Argentina after the war.

Kadgien died in 1964 and the oil painting remained with his daughter and son-in-law in Mar del Plata. In August 2025, journalists from the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad spotted it in a real-estate listing.

Experts from the National Academy of Fine Arts verified that the work, previously attributed to Giuseppe Ghislandi, is by Giacomo Ceruti, born in Milan in 1698. DAIA submitted a technical-historical report on the restitution of Nazi-looted cultural property.
