Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty hosted his Syrian counterpart Asaad Al-Shaibani in Cairo for expanded bilateral discussions attended by senior officials from both sides, including ministers responsible for industry and economy.
In a statement, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry quoted Abdelatty stressing the deep historical and cultural ties between Egypt and Syria. He noted Cairo’s position on the Syrian crisis has focused on supporting security, stability, territorial integrity, and state institutions since its outbreak. Abdelatty reaffirmed support for the Syrian people’s legitimate aspirations while emphasizing respect for Syria’s sovereignty, unity, and rejection of foreign interference, alongside the need to combat terrorism and foreign fighters.
On regional issues, Abdelatty expressed Egypt’s categorical rejection of Israeli violations of Syrian sovereignty and condemned attempts to exploit the situation for further territorial occupation. He called on Israel to adhere to the 1974 disengagement agreement and reiterated Egypt’s longstanding support for ending the Israeli occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights.
The talks also addressed broader regional developments, including US-Iran negotiations, de-escalation efforts, and the situation in Lebanon. Abdelatty stressed the importance of coordinated regional and international efforts to prevent wider conflict and reinforce security and stability.
