The review commission for the constitutional accusation against former minister Nicolás Grau heard from the budget director and former minister Mario Marcel on Wednesday. Both addressed discrepancies in fiscal projections for the first quarter of 2026.
In the fifth session of the Chamber of Deputies commission, budget director José Pablo Gómez answered questions about the fiscal situation. Defense lawyer Patricio Zapata described him as the “testigo clave” because the accusation is based 80 or 90 percent on the first-quarter fiscal report.
Gómez stated there is still no clarity on the causes of discrepancies in the debt projection. He explained that the summary investigation seeks to determine what happened in preparing that projection and that results cannot be anticipated quickly.
Former minister Mario Marcel also participated and recalled the differences in macroeconomic projections when Gabriel Boric’s government took office. He said “nadie se preocupó ni de calificarlo” and that the focus was on rebalancing public finances.
Meanwhile, RN deputy Andrés Celis announced he will vote against the accusation due to lack of conviction of intentional misconduct. The PDG bench maintains its intention to vote as a bloc, while liberals request freedom of action.
