Fraud via Nequi payment requests rises in Colombia

Nequi users in Colombia are reporting a rise in scams that empty accounts with a single 'Accept' click. Fraudsters pose as buyers and send fake payment requests. The platform urges verifying all transactions before approval.

In recent weeks, a new fraud scheme has surged among Nequi users, Colombia's popular mobile banking app. Scammers send payment requests mimicking pending transactions, tricking victims into pressing 'Accept' to supposedly confirm an incoming payment. In fact, this authorizes an immediate withdrawal from the user's account, without needing passwords or additional credentials.

Fraudsters reach out via WhatsApp or phone calls, impersonating buyers who claim to have made a deposit. This method preys on the confusion of those unfamiliar with digital operations, such as older adults and small merchants reliant on electronic payments. Cases have multiplied in December, aligning with heightened holiday shopping transactions.

Nequi clarifies that notifications requiring 'Accept' typically relate to charges, not deposits. 'Unexpected requests should never be approved, and payments must be confirmed directly with the involved party,' the platform states. It advises checking details directly in the app before authorizing any action.

If victimized, Nequi recommends filing a formal complaint with the Fiscalía General de la Nación, detailing the incident and recipient account. Then, contact the hotline (+57) 300 600 01 00 or in-app chat, providing evidence like screenshots. The company stresses that its specialized team supports affected users and that vigilance must increase during high financial activity periods to counter these threats.
