The National Police Service has called for calm and restraint among residents of Huruma, Nairobi, following violent clashes that left one Kenya Medical Training College student dead and two vehicles ablaze. The incident began with a robbery report that escalated into confrontations with police. Authorities assure the public that a full investigation is underway.
The incident in Huruma, Nairobi, began around 8:00 a.m. on February 7, 2026, when a member of the public reported a robbery at Huruma Police Station. He alleged that five young men attacked him, robbing Ksh1,800 in cash and a silver chain, and threatened his life. Police visited the scene and arrested two suspects that morning, with two more apprehended around 7:30 p.m.
During the second arrests, one suspect raised an alarm, inciting nearby youths to throw stones and projectiles at officers to obstruct the operation. Police reportedly fired shots into the air to disperse the hostile crowd. Soon after, information emerged that a girl studying at Kenya Medical Training College had been fatally injured in the confrontation.
The student's death sparked residents to torch two vehicles and engage in violence that continued into February 8, 2026. In a statement, NPS Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said a “full documentation and accountability process” was underway. The Independent Policing Oversight Authority has taken over the investigation, cooperating fully with police.
The victim's family has demanded justice, noting she was about to resume her tertiary studies. The clashes halted activities in the estate, with gangs exploiting the chaos to loot shops. One witness said, “These are clearly thieves; they are taking everything from those shops. They are just breaking into shops without fear.” NPS urged residents to avoid further lawlessness and allow due process to unfold.
