Student researchers launch system for parents to monitor school progress

Student researchers in South Africa have developed the Efunda Learning Management System to allow parents to track their children's academic progress through grades, homework and attendance.

The platform was created by Luthando Sibozo, an MBA candidate at Tshwane University of Technology, along with Mfobe Ntintelo and Zipho Luvuno. It includes a WhatsApp chatbot to make access easier for parents without data for the website.

The system has been piloted at several schools in the Eastern Cape. Teachers and principals received training, and parent feedback has been positive. One parent noted that it could save time compared to attending meetings and help identify areas where a child needs support.

Former lecturer Tersia du Plessis welcomed the idea but raised concerns about teachers' workload for uploading materials and parents' ability to assist with complex subjects. The developers have approached the Department of Basic Education but reported challenges with tender processes.
