Bareo, a new Japanese-Filipino restaurant, has opened in downtown Charleston, South Carolina. Owned by Nikko Cagalanan and Paula Kramer, it occupies the former location of their acclaimed Filipino spot Kultura. The menu features hand-rolled dumplings, onigiri rice snacks, and traditional shaved ice desserts.
Bareo opened on February 13, 2026, at 73 Spring Street in Charleston's Cannonborough-Elliottborough neighborhood. The space, previously home to Kultura until its relocation to 267 Rutledge Avenue last fall, has been redesigned with black-and-white wallpaper, a matcha green floor, and decor inspired by Tokyo's Shinjuku district. Elements include Shoji screen-style ceiling panels, spider lighting, Japanese comics, and hand-drawn features created by Agatha Strompolos of Agatha Jane Interior Design.
The restaurant emphasizes technique and tradition in its Japanese-Filipino cuisine. Signature items include kakigori, a shaved ice dessert introduced to the Philippines in the 1940s, with flavors like mango float—featuring orange-tinted shaved ice, sweetened syrup, whipped cream, and fresh mango chunks—and coconut pandan. Savory options feature hand-rolled dumplings, onigiri stuffed with tuna yuzu, crab and mango, served with nori for custom rolls, Tinola noodle soup, and a bento box with miso salmon, braised pork, potato salad, house-made pickles, miso-sinagang soup, and a boiled egg.
Diners order by marking selections on paper, similar to a sushi restaurant. The beverage menu offers miniature pots of tea, beer, sake with nearly a dozen varieties, and five mocktails like Matcha Grasshopper or Coconut Calpico, which can be upgraded with sake or Cocchi Americano.
