Maryland parents plead guilty in malnourishment death of daughter

Bernice Byrd and Gerald Byrd have pleaded guilty to child abuse charges after their 5-year-old daughter Zona died from severe malnourishment in Baltimore. Authorities say the parents failed to provide adequate food, leading to one child scavenging school garbage for meals. The couple faces life in prison at their upcoming sentencing.

On October 14, 2024, emergency responders were called to a home on the 2200 block of Aiken Street in Baltimore, Maryland, where 5-year-old Zona Byrd was found unresponsive and "cold to the touch" on the second floor. She was pronounced dead at 12:50 p.m. that day. An autopsy showed Zona weighed just 17.5 pounds and appeared severely emaciated, with no evidence of physical trauma contributing to her death. Her clothes were too large, and she had no muscle tone.

Police discovered three other children at the residence, including Zona's 6-year-old brother, who weighed only 35 pounds and could barely stand. All were taken to Johns Hopkins Medical Center for evaluation. There, the children ate food "quickly and intently," according to officials. The brother remained hospitalized until October 26, 2024.

Investigators found the kitchen cupboards empty of food, with only frozen meat in the freezer and a salad in the refrigerator. Non-perishable items were locked behind the parents' bedroom door and closet on the second floor. Bernice Byrd, 33, and Gerald Byrd, 36, could not recall when they last fed Zona and avoided responsibility for her nourishment.

Prosecutors revealed that one of the surviving children had been seen rummaging through school garbage in search of food. Baltimore City State's Attorney Ivan Bates described the case as having "nauseating" facts. He stated, "No punishment will be as severe for these defendants as living with the knowledge that they murdered their innocent child." Bates added that the guilty pleas ensure the safety of Zona's siblings, who were also victims.

The Byrds pleaded guilty to first-degree child abuse resulting in death and first-degree child abuse. They are scheduled for sentencing on June 10 and face a maximum of life in prison.
