Mercedes launches W17 car for 2026 Formula 1 season

The Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team unveiled its 2026 challenger, the W17 E Performance, in a digital launch event on February 2. The car introduces major regulatory changes, including a revamped power unit and smaller chassis. Team principal Toto Wolff emphasized the challenges and opportunities ahead.

On February 2, 2026, the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team held a digital season launch event, marking its first formal step toward the new Formula 1 era. The event introduced the Mercedes-AMG F1 W17 E Performance, highlighting adaptations to the sport's sweeping 2026 regulations.

The W17 features a new hybrid power unit from Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains, with a near 50:50 split between internal combustion and electrical output. Key changes include the removal of the MGU-H, an upgrade of the MGU-K from 120 kW to 350 kW, and advanced energy recovery strategies. Sustainable fuel from PETRONAS serves as a drop-in solution to reduce carbon impact while maintaining performance. The power unit integrates closely with the car's cooling and aerodynamics for efficiency across various track conditions.

Hywel Thomas, Managing Director of Mercedes AMG HPP, described the shift as 'a revolution,' noting the need for rapid design and validation cycles due to increased hybrid emphasis and sustainable fuels. Datuk Sazali from PETRONAS highlighted the integrated formulation of fuels, lubricants, and fluids to optimize the car's potential.

The chassis complies with new rules: a 200 mm shorter wheelbase, 100 mm narrower width, and about 30 kg lighter minimum weight. Active aerodynamics via movable wings balance drag and downforce, while narrower tires and revised suspension replace the Drag Reduction System. Boost and Overtake modes enable overtaking through energy deployment.

Technical Director James Allison called the changes a 'wholesale transformation,' expressing excitement for the innovation opportunities despite the challenges.

The driver lineup remains stable, with George Russell and Kimi Antonelli continuing after a strong 2025. Russell secured two wins and finished fourth in the Drivers' Championship, while rookie Antonelli earned multiple podiums and a Sprint pole in Miami. Fred Vesti joins as Third Driver, supporting simulator work and IMSA racing. New Development Drivers include F1 Academy champion Doriane Pin, F2 winner Joshua Dürksen, and former F1 driver Anthony Davidson.

The W17's livery evolves with a PETRONAS green flow line, transitioning from silver to deep black, accented by an AMG rhombus and Mercedes star pattern. Toto Wolff stated, '2026 represents a decisive moment... We approach this next era with clear ambition, focused execution, and an uncompromising commitment to delivering results.'
