Risiko for øget spredning af blåmejsesygdom i Sverige

The bird flu virus H5N1 has been detected for the first time outside the US in a cow in the Netherlands. Antibodies against the pathogen were found in the milk of the animal on a farm in the province of Friesland. The Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut in Greifswald confirms that no such case was previously known worldwide.

In this year's bird count, the blackbird reached a record high of 52,364 observed individuals, according to Birdlife Sweden. The great tit tops the list as usual, while the number of participants rose to 19,000 due to winter weather. The count took place over the weekend and highlights changes in bird populations.

TBE cases in Sweden have tripled over ten years despite rising vaccinations. Åke Lundkvist, professor of virology at Uppsala University, suspects the virus may have changed, reducing vaccine effectiveness. Researchers are now analyzing 12,000 ticks to investigate.

The sudden death of Diallo BB, a top grand prix dressage horse owned by German Olympian Jessica von Bredow-Werndl, has drawn attention to equine Borna disease virus, though the virus was later ruled out as the cause. The 11-year-old Hanoverian gelding's illness remains unexplained, prompting interest in the rare neurotropic virus primarily affecting Central Europe. With fatality rates of 80 to 100 percent in horses, the disease underscores ongoing veterinary challenges.

Nearly 50 African penguin chicks rescued from flooding on Bird Island are now healthy and gaining weight under expert care at a rehabilitation centre in Gqeberha. The chicks were evacuated after heavy rains on 24 February washed away their nests. Climate change is exacerbating such threats to seabird colonies.

The meningitis outbreak in Canterbury, Kent, UK, has escalated with 29 infections and two deaths, prompting mass vaccinations and antibiotics distribution. Authorities warn of possible spread beyond Kent, while Swedish experts advise vigilance.

A virus typically found in marine animals has infected humans in China for the first time, leading to serious eye conditions resembling glaucoma. Researchers identified covert mortality nodavirus in all 70 patients studied from 2022 to 2025. The pathogen, linked to handling or eating raw seafood, shows signs of possible family transmission.
