Ubisoft revealed Teammates, a first-person shooter prototype powered by generative AI, during its November 21, 2025, investor presentation. The demo features AI companions that respond to voice commands in real-time, aiming to create more interactive gameplay. CEO Yves Guillemot described generative AI as a revolution comparable to the shift to 3D graphics.

Overview

Ubisoft showcased Teammates as its first playable generative AI research project, developed by the team behind the 2024 Neo NPC prototype demonstrated at GDC. The demo utilizes the Snowdrop Engine, also used in games like The Division 2 and Star Wars Outlaws, to enable dynamic NPC interactions.

Gameplay Features

Teammates is a first-person shooter where players can issue natural voice commands to AI squadmates Pablo and Sofia for combat and puzzle-solving. An AI assistant named Jaspar provides mission tracking, advice, and guidance. The prototype includes a custom API with guardrails to prevent AI hallucinations, toxicity, or off-script behavior, ensuring responses align with narrative intent.

Narrative director Virginie Mosser emphasized the focus on human creativity: "It's really about experimenting with entirely new ways of creating interactive stories. Our role is to give AI meaning, to narrativize it, ensuring logic doesn’t replace soul."

Ubisoft director of GenAI gameplay Xavier Manzanares added: "Games of tomorrow will listen, understand, and react to players far more than today, and our research gives a glimpse of what adaptive, generative play could add on top of proven game systems."

Company Context

Guillemot highlighted company-wide AI integration: "We are making great strides in applying Gen AI to high-value use cases that bring tangible benefits to our players and teams... It's as big [of] a revolution for our industry as the shift to 3D."

The demo is currently in testing with a small group of players, serving as both a prototype and technology testbed. Ubisoft plans to unveil its new 'Creative Houses' model in January 2026.

Hvad folk siger

Reactions on X to Ubisoft's Teammates generative AI demo are mixed, with excitement over potential for immersive voice-responsive AI companions in single-player games, skepticism about Ubisoft's execution given past failures, and criticism preferring scripted AI over generative tech. Journalists provide neutral hands-on previews highlighting real-time interactions, while users express doubts on ethics and necessity.
