Ateneo Law dean Joey Hofileña remembered for his grace

Jose Maria “Joey” Hofileña, dean of Ateneo Law School, passed away on February 26, remembered for his calm demeanor and kindness. He and his wife of 35 years, Chay, were seen as a perfect match by many. His sudden death has left the Ateneo community mourning a life of notable achievements.

Jose Maria “Joey” Hofileña, known as Ooway to friends since 1978, was a central figure at Ateneo de Manila University. He joined Dulaang Sibol, a theater company founded by Onofre Pagsanghan, where he served as lead actor and was part of the track and field team as an honors student. Attorney Tito Lopez, a friend, described him as the “fair-haired” and “favored” one, always carrying an easy grace.

In 2018, he was appointed dean of Ateneo Law School, following his valedictorian graduation from law school, studies at Harvard Law School, and partnership at the Sycip, Salazar law firm. In her eulogy, Maria Ressa noted that Joey was the “calm center in moments of chaos.” Gejo Jimenez recalled, “I do remember how I felt. Loved as a brother, looked after, seen. It certainly was like a family for me, with Mr. Pagsi like our second father.”

Joey fell ill suddenly after celebrating Ateneo Law School's bar exam results. He was admitted to the ICU and passed away on February 26, just weeks later. His inurnment is scheduled for March 8. In his eulogy, Joey's brother Jimmy said, “Gone too soon,” but offered hope in God's plan. This piece by John Nery reflects Joey's lesson: facing difficulty with faith.
