Der Bau des Eisenbahnprojekts Awash Kombolcha Hara Gebeya wurde nach einer längeren Unterbrechung, die durch Schäden und Plünderungen während des Konflikts im Norden verursacht worden war, wieder aufgenommen. Die 392 Kilometer lange Strecke wurde ursprünglich im Jahr 2007 äthiopischer Zeitrechnung begonnen und sollte bis 2012 fertiggestellt sein. Beamten zufolge wird die Fertigstellung des Projekts die Handelssysteme optimieren und bedeutende Beschäftigungsmöglichkeiten schaffen. An der Zeremonie zum Neustart nahmen die Sprecherin des Regionalrats von Amhara, Fantu Tesfaye, der stellvertretende Regionalverwalter Dr. Abdu Hussen und weitere hochrangige regionale Beamte teil.
