Exhibition of 291 Pre-Hispanic gold pieces arrives at Alicante's MARQ

Alicante's Archaeological Museum has opened the exhibition “El oro y el universo”, displaying nearly 300 pieces from Bogotá's Museo del Oro. The show, which runs until May 2027, features gold and ceramic artifacts that explore Colombian indigenous worldviews.

The loan comprises 291 archaeological objects, 157 of them in gold. Highlights include hybrid figures such as human-bats, bird- and feline-shaped pectorals from Tolima, and a Muisca offering of more than thirty figurines. Several items are on display in Europe for the first time.

The exhibition is divided into three sections: “Todos somos universo”, “Transformaciones” and “Cuidar el mundo”. The route features multisensory elements, including a recreated maloca scented with mango and music played on 600- to 1,000-year-old Pre-Hispanic ocarinas and flutes.

Alicante's provincial government supported the project together with Fundación MARQ and the University of Cambridge. After Alicante the exhibition will travel to further European venues. Organizers note that the objects represent active entities rather than mere ornaments, contrasting with the European myth of El Dorado.
