ISM services PMI rises to 54.5 in May

The Institute for Supply Management reported its May services Purchasing Managers' Index at 54.5. The reading exceeded expectations and marked continued expansion in the sector.

The headline composite index stood above the forecast of 53.7. It also reflected the fifth straight month of gains in the 12-month PMI average, which reached 52.8 percent after rising 1.1 points from December 2025. Business activity posted its second-highest level since October 2024. No commodities appeared on the down-in-price list for the third consecutive month. Aluminum, copper, diesel, gasoline, software licensing and transportation all remained on the up-in-price list with multimonth runs.

U.S. consumer inflation rose to 4.2% in May, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Wednesday, matching economists’ expectations and marking the highest 12-month reading since April 2023.

U.S. manufacturing activity expanded for an eleventh consecutive month in June but at a slower pace than expected. The S&P Global PMI fell to 53.9, down 1.2 points from the prior month and below forecasts.

China's official manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI) fell slightly to 50.3 in April from 50.4 the previous month, though it exceeded expectations. New export orders and imports expanded for the first time since early 2024, but softer domestic activity pushed the non-manufacturing PMI into contraction. Price pressures remained in expansionary territory, indicating ongoing reflation.

The Chicago Fed National Activity Index rose to -0.02 in June from -0.19 in May. The three-month moving average also improved to -0.05 from -0.10.
