Marcos urges new AFP generals to protect Philippine sovereignty

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday urged 42 newly promoted generals and flag officers of the Armed Forces of the Philippines to uphold the country's sovereignty amid ongoing challenges in the West Philippine Sea.

In a swearing-in ceremony at Malacañan Palace on December 18, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. congratulated 42 newly promoted generals and flag officers from the Philippine Army, Philippine Air Force, and Philippine Navy. He emphasized that their promotions bring greater responsibilities.

"Your promotion reflects the nation’s confidence in your integrity and professionalism, your dedication to duty. The stars you bear shine more brightly today—as constant reminders of your obligations to protect our sovereignty, to uphold national security, and safeguard the freedoms of every Filipino," Marcos said.

He added, "This ceremony serves as a powerful affirmation that our loyalty is anchored to the Constitution, to our democratic institutions, and above all, to the people."

The president noted that the government has taken meaningful steps to keep the Armed Forces of the Philippines disciplined and competent, including international partnerships in training, defense cooperation, and interagency coordination. "Through joint exercises and defense partnerships, we have also sharpened our readiness to address existing and emerging security challenges," he said.

Marcos acknowledged ongoing sovereignty challenges in the West Philippine Sea, where China claims the waters for itself. Although the Permanent Court of Arbitration ruled in favor of the Philippines, China has continued to encroach on national waters, including dangerous maneuvers against Philippine boats.

In a shifting political landscape, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. faces attempts to destabilize his administration, but structural changes make removal unlikely without constitutional processes. Economic stability and institutional reforms have neutralized traditional paths to ouster like military intervention or mass protests. Impeachment remains the only viable mechanism, though it faces significant hurdles in the current Congress.
