Mwss-ro fines Maynilad P54.28 million for service interruptions

The Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System-Regulatory Office ordered Maynilad Water Services Inc. to pay a P54.28 million fine for repeated interruptions from its water treatment plants. It also mandated refunds of P327.96 per affected water service connection, to appear on bills by May 2026.

The MWSS-RO ruled yesterday to impose a P54.28 million fine on Maynilad Water Services Inc. for service interruptions in the supply zones of its Putatan Water Treatment Plant and Poblacion Water Treatment Plant. The affected areas include Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Parañaque, Imus, and Bacoor.

The regulatory office stated that the West Zone concessionaire breached its obligation to provide uninterrupted water supply at a minimum pressure of seven pounds per square inch to its 165,518 connected customers.

The MWSS-RO directed Maynilad to credit P327.96 per affected water service connection to customers' bills by May 2026, as per Resolution 2026-06-CA. This measure aims to compensate those impacted by the disruptions.

The Water Services Regulatory Board (WASREB) has approved tariff increases for water and sewerage services by the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) for the 2025/2026 to 2028/2029 period. The hikes will fund a Ksh2.57 billion investment in smart water meters to reduce non-revenue water from 54 percent to 39 percent by 2028/2029. Low-consumption households will face the sharpest rises, with water charges up to Ksh23 per cubic meter and sewerage up to Ksh15.

The Minas Gerais government raised the fine on miner Vale from R$ 1.7 million to R$ 3.3 million due to drainage system failures in two mines that experienced leaks on January 25, 2026. The decision accounts for the company's history of recidivism and contrasts with Vale's claim that no tailings were transported. Measures include suspending operations at one mine to prevent environmental risks.
