Prosecutor Lastra appeals non-renewal to Supreme Court in Madrid

Almudena Lastra filed an appeal on Thursday to the Supreme Court against the appointment of Isabel Martín as the new top prosecutor of Madrid. The replacement proposal was made on April 30 by Attorney General Teresa Peramato.

Prosecutor Almudena Lastra appealed on Thursday to the Contentious-Administrative Chamber of the Supreme Court against the royal decree appointing María Isabel Martín López as the top prosecutor of the Community of Madrid. Lastra had held the post for five years.

Peramato proposed Martín on April 30 citing her “high level of technical competence, professional rigor and proven ability to take on responsibilities of special complexity”. Martín worked in the Technical Secretariat of the Prosecutor’s Office and ranked 1,306 in the scale, compared with 424 for Lastra.

Lastra testified as a prosecution witness against former Attorney General Álvaro García Ortiz, who was convicted of revealing secrets. The Association of Prosecutors criticised Peramato’s decision, which she denied was a purge and said the changes followed the standard five-year term of office.
