Rogério Santos, der Bürgermeister von Santos, erklärte, dass er sein Amt vorübergehend niederlegen wird, um sich wegen eines im Frühstadium diagnostizierten Gebärmutterhalskrebses behandeln zu lassen. Die stellvertretende Bürgermeisterin wird die Amtsgeschäfte interimistisch übernehmen.

Die Ankündigung erfolgte am Montag in einem in den sozialen Medien veröffentlichten Video. Der 60-jährige Santos erklärte, er werde dem medizinischen Rat folgen und die städtischen Arbeiten aus der Ferne weiter verfolgen.

Er wurde erstmals 2020 gewählt und 2024 für eine Amtszeit bis 2028 wiedergewählt. Die stellvertretende Bürgermeisterin Audrey Kleys wird die Führung interimistisch übernehmen.

Die Beurlaubung wird am Dienstag offiziell im Amtsblatt veröffentlicht.
