Xbox makes some first-party games permanent exclusives again

Xbox is reversing course on multiplatform releases for select titles. Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution will remain Xbox exclusives permanently. The company says more such games are planned.

Xbox chief strategist stated that the two titles represent the start of a new approach. “To grow a platform like ours, you have to have exclusive games and services,” he said. “These are not going to be the only two titles.” He confirmed they are permanent exclusives rather than timed releases.

Chief content officer Matt Booty noted that decisions will not focus solely on single-player games. He said the studio must balance existing commitments with new strategy under CEO Asha Sharma. Titles such as Halo: Campaign Evolved and Fable will still launch on PlayStation 5 as previously promised, with Fable due in early 2027.

The shift follows Microsoft’s earlier move to release most first-party games across platforms. An anonymous Xbox source questioned whether limiting audience reach is wise amid ongoing studio challenges.
