AMD has launched its FSR Redstone update, targeting the Radeon RX 9000 series with support for over 200 games by the end of 2025. The technology promises more than three times the performance boost in select titles. Key features include enhanced upscaling and frame generation, though older GPU architectures receive limited compatibility.
Overview of FSR Redstone
AMD's latest advancement in its FidelityFX Super Resolution suite, FSR Redstone, focuses on improving visuals and frame rates for modern gaming setups. Designed exclusively for the Radeon RX 9000 "RDNA 4" GPUs, it introduces machine learning-based enhancements that were previously glimpsed in upcoming titles.
Key Features
The update includes four primary components:
- FSR Redstone Upscaling: An improved neural rendering model for high-quality, low-latency image reconstruction, building on FSR 4.
- FSR Redstone Frame-Gen: Uses advanced neural networks to generate additional frames, reducing artifacts in dynamic scenes like those in racing simulations.
- FSR Redstone Ray Regeneration: Applies AI to filter noise in ray-traced renders, delivering sharper images without performance hits, similar to competing technologies but tailored for AMD hardware.
- FSR Redstone Neural Caching: A real-time algorithm for faster ray tracing global illumination, available via SDK for developers starting now, with game integrations planned for 2026.
Support and Performance
By the end of 2025, over 200 games will support the upscaling feature, while more than 40 titles incorporate frame generation. AMD reports FPS gains exceeding 3x across various games, reaching up to 4.7x in demanding ones. For older RDNA architectures, enabling Redstone reverts to FSR 3 functionality.
Early implementations appear in games like Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, showcasing ray regeneration, and a technology demo with Warhammer 40,000: Darktide highlights neural caching. While NVIDIA holds an edge with broader compatibility, AMD's approach emphasizes accessibility through driver-level activation or in-game options.
This release positions FSR Redstone as a competitive tool for high-fidelity gaming on AMD's newest hardware.
