IEBC Mombasa voter drive ends at 65% of target as youth lack IDs

Mombasa's segment of the IEBC 2026 Voter Registration Drive, launched nationally on March 30, concluded Tuesday with 47,632 new voters registered—65% of the 73,280 target. Thousands of youth missed out due to lacking national IDs, despite expanded centers.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) wrapped up its targeted voter registration in Mombasa County on April 28, after a month-long effort that expanded to 269 centers, including 42 new ones to reach more youth.

Lack of national IDs was the primary barrier, especially for those delayed in obtaining documents. Mvita led with 16,671 new registrations, followed by Changamwe at 14,289. Kisauni, Jomvu, Nyali, and Likoni fell below 25% of their targets.

IEBC Mombasa manager Dr. Swallah Yusuf reported 23,137 uncollected IDs at Bima Towers and 147 at Huduma Centre. "We targeted 73,280 but reached 65%, equaling 47,632," Dr. Yusuf said. The office also handled 9,360 transfer requests and 137 voter detail corrections, with no security issues.

Dr. Yusuf encouraged affected youth to register at IEBC offices or Huduma Centres ahead of the 2027 general election.

Participating in Ethiopian elections requires prior voter registration as a prerequisite. Under Proclamation No. 1162/2011, eligible individuals are Ethiopian citizens aged 18 or older who have resided in the electoral district for at least six months. However, those with mental illnesses impairing judgment, under court-ordered punishments, or legally deprived of voting rights cannot register.
