Mombasa port launches new trade route to India

The Port of Mombasa has launched a new trade route connecting East Africa directly to India, operated by Turkish shipping firm Akkon Line. This bi-weekly service seeks to improve cargo flows and economic links between the regions.

The Port of Mombasa reached a significant milestone on Sunday, March 8, 2026, with the launch of a new trade route linking East Africa directly to India. Operated by Akkon Line under its East Africa Service (EAS), the route aims to bolster cargo transport and economic connections between the regions.

The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) announced the development in a statement, confirming that the inaugural voyage received the traditional certificate of first call, presented by Captain William Rutto during a ceremony acknowledging the vessel's initial official visit to the port.

Speaking at the event, Captain Rutto highlighted the port's dedication to delivering high-quality services to shipping partners while fostering international relations. “Mombasa Port remains committed to providing world-class services to our shipping partners and enhancing Kenya’s position as a key maritime hub,” Rutto said. “Every new service strengthens regional trade and reflects our strategic vision for East Africa’s shipping sector.”

Effective immediately, the East Africa Service will run on a bi-weekly schedule, connecting major South Asian ports such as Nhava Sheva, Mundra, and Karachi with East African ports in Mombasa and Dar es Salaam.

Founded in 2018, Akkon Line is an expanding Turkish shipping company specializing in emerging trade corridors and is regarded as one of Turkey's largest container shipping operators. Its entry into the East African market further cements Mombasa's importance as a hub for regional trade and international shipping, enabling more efficient links to key South Asian markets and beyond.

The EAS launch will also reinforce Mombasa’s status as a logistics center for East and Central Africa, boosting trade volumes and solidifying the port’s place in global shipping networks. Both Akkon Line and its local partner, Rais Shipping Services, thanked KPA for its ongoing support, noting that efficient port operations and customs processes are essential for maintaining international shipping services.

The new service is anticipated to enhance regional trade competitiveness, aiding Kenya and neighboring countries in accessing South Asian markets more directly and speeding up imports of essential goods.
