The open-source VKD3D-Proton project has released version 3.0, bringing major improvements to Direct3D 12 support on Vulkan for Linux gaming. This update includes AMD FSR4 integration and a complete rewrite of the DXBC shader backend. Games like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered now run better on Linux.
On November 17, 2025, developers announced the release of VKD3D-Proton 3.0, a significant update to the free and open-source implementation of the full Direct3D 12 API on top of Vulkan. This follows the recent Proton 10 update and aims to enhance Linux gaming compatibility for Windows titles.
Key features include support for AMD FSR4 (FidelityFX Super Resolution 4), achieved by implementing AGS WMMA intrinsics through the VK_KHR_cooperative_matrix and VK_KHR_shader_float8 Vulkan extensions. A full rewrite of the DXBC shader backend replaces the legacy vkd3d-shader path, fixing bugs and missing features that previously broke games. According to the developers, this improves support for titles like Red Dead Redemption 2, which now runs properly in D3D12 mode.
Additional enhancements encompass experimental support for D3D12 work graphs, default exposure of AdvancedTextureOpsSupported from SM 6.7 if the VK_KHR_maintenance8 extension is available, and support for AMD_anti_lag when exposed. The release also adds tight alignment support from the recent AgilitySDK, shared resource path compatibility on upstream Wine, exposure of sparse TIER_4, and new batching logic for better performance in many games.
Performance tweaks include improved handling of GDeflate decompression without the extension, optimizations for Halo Infinite on NVIDIA GPUs, and preferences for 2D tiling in The Last of Us Part 1. It also refines depth/stencil to color image copies.
VKD3D-Proton 3.0 addresses issues in numerous games, such as Death Stranding, Helldivers II, Star Citizen, Ninja Gaiden 4, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Monster Hunter Wilds, Starfield, Wreckfest 2, Satisfactory, Street Fighter 6, Wuthering Waves, and Gray Zone Warfare. Improvements extend to Rise of the Tomb Raider, Port Royale, Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, Mafia: Definitive Edition, and FINAL FANTASY TACTICS – The Ivalice Chronicles. The update facilitates easier integration into Linux-native projects.
