Former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard called on the FIA to focus more on entertainment after the British Grand Prix ended under the safety car at Silverstone. Charles Leclerc secured victory for Ferrari, but a late crash by Max Verstappen led to the anticlimactic finish.
Coulthard argued on the Up To Speed podcast that rules should allow flexibility to deliver a better spectacle. He noted a regulation preventing a restart if cars are released from the safety car within a lap of the finish but suggested the process could be sped up once the leader is picked up.
The FIA confirmed the race followed Article B5.13.5, requiring one additional lap after unlapping, though a software error caused an erroneous "Safety Car In This Lap" message on timing screens. Fans at the circuit booed the outcome.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said the correct procedures were applied and joked he wished the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix had been handled the same way. Driver George Russell agreed that race control should treat the end of an event no differently from any other safety car period, securing his second-place finish and championship points.
