Review critiques Tesla Model Y three-row version in China

A Chinese reviewer has tested the new three-row Tesla Model Y, praising its driving dynamics but criticizing the cramped third row and stiff ride. The Model YL, a six-seater long wheelbase variant, is already on sale in China and expected soon in Europe. Its future in the US remains uncertain.

Tesla recently released the Model YL, a three-row, six-seater long wheelbase version of its popular Model Y crossover, targeting China's growing demand for electrified family vehicles. This launch follows the introduction of cheaper Standard versions of the Model 3 and Model Y just last week, which sacrificed some comforts to lower prices. The Model YL arrived a few weeks earlier and is positioned as a competitor to other three-row EV crossovers in the Chinese market.

Mark Rainford, from the YouTube channel Inside China Auto, provided a mixed review after driving the vehicle. He commended its handling, noting, “every input that you make, feels like it’s making an impact on the road. The balance, and the poise of the car is just excellent.” However, the suspension feels soft yet results in a bouncy ride, and steering is light, making it less engaging than some rivals like the Zeekr 7X or Nio ES6.

The third row draws significant criticism for its awkward positioning: seats mounted close to the floor with limited legroom and headrests too near the glass, offering little sun protection. In contrast, competitors provide more traditional seating with better space. The interior features vegan leather and a responsive screen, but lacks innovations like the Li Auto i8's Nappa leather, dual screens, reclining second-row seats, or a fold-down theater screen for entertainment. The Model Y's second-row powered armrests are a highlight, though seats do not tilt or recline.

Despite these flaws, Rainford is optimistic about its prospects in China, where brand loyalty dominates. He stated, “In China….the brand is what does the talking. Most buyers don’t even research the competition at all.” This could help the Model YL succeed against more comfortable alternatives. While unavailable in the US for now, it may reach Europe soon.
