Au premier tour, Schumacher a percuté l'arrière de la voiture du pilote américain Santino Ferrucci après que celui-ci a été poussé large dans un virage. L'accident n'était pas de la faute de Schumacher, mais sa voiture de course a été détruite, l'obligeant à en sortir. Son équipe a rapporté l'absence de blessures après un contrôle médical. Parti de la 21e position en raison de tests limités avec la nouvelle voiture, le départ a été difficile. Avant la course, Schumacher avait déclaré : « Je ne vois pas cela comme une année de rookie et je ne commettrai pas d'erreurs de débutant ». Pourtant, il n'a pas pu tenir sa position dans les premières luttes. Pendant ses années en Formule 1 2021 et 2022 avec Haas, Schumacher a connu plusieurs malchances avec de lourds accidents. Après une année comme pilote de réserve chez Mercedes, il a couru deux ans pour Alpine en Championnat du monde d'endurance, y compris les 24 Heures du Mans. Sur Instagram, Schumacher a commenté : « C'était une course frustrante aujourd'hui, nous n'aurions rien pu faire différemment — mais c'est parfois le sport automobile. Il y a beaucoup à apprendre et à travailler. La semaine prochaine, nous attaquerons à nouveau ». La prochaine opportunité arrive sur le Phoenix Raceway en Arizona ce week-end.
