The government has given the Public Health Agency the mandate to introduce binding rules on the maximum allowed indoor temperature in homes for the elderly and disabled.
Climate and Environment Minister Romina Pourmokhtari (L) stated that people in risk groups should not have to become ill or die because the temperature in their home becomes too high.
The decision is based on a proposal from the Climate Adaptation Inquiry submitted in 2025. The Public Health Agency will now be able to issue regulations instead of general recommendations, where the temperature today should not exceed 26 degrees.
New rules are expected to be in place by next summer. The decision applies only to special housing and not to people receiving home care. No sanctions such as fines are introduced for municipalities that fail to meet the requirements.
