Kenyan schools adopt electric and solar stoves for clean cooking

Several schools in Kenya have begun using modern electric and solar-powered stoves to cut costs, improve health and protect the environment.

At Al-Huda Muslim School in Majengo, Kajiado County, which has more than 820 students, firewood previously cost Sh20,000 monthly. Teacher Shaaban Iddi said smoke affected cooks' health and caused delays in meal preparation.

The school now uses EcoBora electric and solar stoves. Meals cook faster and the kitchen environment is cleaner.

PCEA Mama Ngina Primary and Junior Secondary School in Kiambu County, with 2,500 students, spent Sh300,000 per term on firewood. Deputy head teacher Rachael Ndune said the school now reduces firewood use and saves time.

EcoBora, a Nairobi-based company, provides three to seven days of training. Director Joy Kwamboka said schools can cut emissions and redirect savings to student nutrition.

Education Minister Abdul Mu'ti has urged students living near their schools to walk or bike there to support President Prabowo Subianto's energy efficiency campaign. The appeal was made in Jakarta on Monday, March 30, 2026.

Hostels of major educational institutes in Mangaluru and Udupi have not yet faced a shortage in the supply of cooking gas (LPG) cylinders, though some have modified their food menus to conserve gas. Hostel managers remain apprehensive about the uninterrupted supply continuing beyond a week. Amid the crisis, Tejaswini Ananthkumar, Managing Trustee of Adamya Chetana, which serves mid-day meals to thousands of school children daily, stressed on social media on Wednesday the need for biofuel-based 'no-LPG kitchens'.

A surge in demand for solar installations in the Philippines has overwhelmed the local industry, leading installers to reject clients or impose longer waits due to low supply from China. The rush stems from fears of fuel price spikes after the US and Israel's attack on Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz. Installers report clients now eagerly seeking solar for energy security.

India's Armed Forces are exploring biogas stoves and expanded solar and wind energy to conserve LPG and fuel amid the global energy crisis triggered by the Iran war. Orders to procure biogas stoves will be initiated soon by the Army, officials told The Indian Express. Restrictions on vehicle movements are also under discussion.
