General Motors rolls out vehicle-to-grid charging update

General Motors launched a firmware update enabling vehicle-to-grid capabilities for its Energy customers on June 9. The company also introduced Energy Pass, a universal interface for accessing multiple public charging networks.

General Motors announced the changes to expand options for electric vehicle owners. The firmware update activates full vehicle-to-grid functionality in GM Energy's vehicle-to-home systems, allowing compatible EVs to supply power back to the local grid. The Energy Pass interface lets GM EV drivers locate and pay for charging at stations from multiple providers. Tesla, Electrify America, and IONNA are supported at launch, with EVgo and ChargePoint to be added soon. Some 250,000 GM electric vehicles already possess bidirectional charging hardware. The new features require specific home setups for vehicle-to-grid use.
