Hong Kong’s Tseung Kwan O–Lam Tin Tunnel fully reopens after fuel truck crash

Hong Kong’s Tseung Kwan O–Lam Tin Tunnel has resumed full operations nearly seven hours after a fuel truck tipped over inside, causing a partial closure. The incident occurred at 12.52pm on Saturday when a medium-sized truck crashed into the tunnel’s right wall. The 53-year-old driver sustained head injuries and was hospitalized.

At 12.52pm on Saturday, police received a report that a medium-sized truck had crashed into the right wall of Hong Kong’s Tseung Kwan O–Lam Tin Tunnel while driving along Cha Kwo Ling Road towards Tseung Kwan O. The truck, carrying biodiesel, tipped over after hitting the tunnel entrance. The driver, a 53-year-old man, suffered head injuries and was taken to United Christian Hospital in Kwun Tong for treatment.

A police spokesman said: “The crash had broken some traffic signs and damaged 50 metres [164 feet] of a wall.” A source familiar with the matter noted that the driver was an imported worker holding a Hong Kong driver’s licence.

The tunnel was partially closed as a result but fully reopened nearly seven hours later. The Fire Services Department attended the scene, though no fuel spill or further hazards were reported. No other injuries occurred, but the incident highlights safety concerns in Hong Kong’s busy tunnels.
