日本気象庁（JMA）は金曜日、気温が40℃以上に達する日を「酷暑日」と呼ぶ新たな分類を導入すると発表した。この表現は、極端な高温に対する警戒をより効果的に呼びかけるためだ。
同庁は公衆を対象とした調査を実施し、47万8千件の回答を集めた。その結果、「酷暑日」が最も人気で2位は「超極暑日（chomoshobi）」、他に「サウナ日」「ステイホーム日」「煮えたぎる日」などが挙がった。
既存のカテゴリーには、25℃以上が「夏日」、30℃以上が「真夏日」、35℃以上が「猛暑日」がある。昨年は観測開始の1889年以来最も暑い夏を記録し、地球温暖化による高温日の増加が背景にある。
JMAによると、この新分類で熱中症などのリスクを強調し、予防行動を促す。
