Study links social connection and sexual wellbeing to student mental health in South Africa

A survey of 1,366 students at a South African university found that material security and psychosocial support, including lower loneliness and higher sexual wellbeing, help students flourish rather than merely cope.

Researchers surveyed students at a public South African university and identified two main profiles. The “Strained and Stressed” group faced greater financial strain, food insecurity, loneliness and weaker health-related social support. The “Resourced and Supported” group showed better mental health outcomes.

About 66 percent of participants had moderate mental health, 28 percent were flourishing and 6 percent were languishing. Psychosocial factors such as life satisfaction and social connection showed the strongest links to wellbeing.

The study also noted that higher sexual wellbeing, defined as feeling safe and respected in intimate relationships, was associated with better mental health. Authors recommend that universities combine structural support with efforts to build belonging and address multiple dimensions of wellbeing.
