Cadillac endures tough debut at Australian Grand Prix

Formula 1's newest team, Cadillac, faced significant challenges in its debut at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. Drivers Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas struggled with the MAC-26 cars, which were the slowest in qualifying. Perez finished 16th while Bottas retired early due to mechanical issues.

Cadillac entered Formula 1 for the 2026 season with experienced drivers Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas. Perez, who spent four years at Red Bull from 2021 to 2024, achieved three pole positions, 29 podiums, and five victories during that time. However, his performance declined in 2024 amid difficulties with the RB20 car, leading to his departure. After a year away in 2025, Perez joined Cadillac, expressing greater appreciation for his input compared to his Red Bull tenure.

In an interview, Perez stated, “Definitely the last six months of my journey with Red Bull were tough in all areas. I really felt like I needed a break.” He added, “I could see things that for the outside were not visible. They became more visible after I left, of course. I had a great time also with Red Bull.” Regarding Cadillac, he noted, “For me, it's just getting back and really enjoying my time with Cadillac. I'm really looking forward to this journey together... being part of something new gives me that motivation.” On feedback, Perez said, “Definitely, I can see the way that the car is being developed and the way we're pushing forwards in the same direction... my feedback is much more appreciated.”

Cadillac CEO Dan Towriss highlighted the value of experience in driver selection during a Beyond The Grid podcast recorded over the Australian Grand Prix weekend. Towriss remarked, “Checo made that come alive in the interview... we really do need someone experienced who can handle the ups and downs with being a first-year team.” He praised both drivers' patience during testing in Barcelona and Bahrain, noting their role in navigating first-year challenges with the complex new cars.

The team's debut proved difficult. The MAC-26s qualified slowest, Bottas retired early after a steering wheel issue led to a fuel system problem, and Perez crossed the line 16th, three laps down as the last classified finisher. Towriss remained optimistic, stating, “I think they have enough experience to pick up where [they] left off... their experience is just going to be key.” Prior to the race, the team focused on simulator calibration in Charlotte following a Barcelona shakedown, where Perez and Bottas provided real-world feedback to refine development.
