Cybertruck owner faces unresolved trim issue at Tesla service

Gary Mitchell took his Cybertruck to a Michigan service center for minor trim fixes and cleaning, but the loose beauty cover above the frunk remained unchanged. Tesla deemed the issue acceptable after comparing it to other vehicles. The gap raises concerns about off-gassing affecting the windshield and camera housing.

Gary Mitchell, a Cybertruck owner, visited a Tesla service center in Michigan to address several minor issues with his vehicle. These included trim problems, two spots on the frunk, and cleaning the camera area. An initial $80 charge for pre-delivery trim issues was waived during the visit.

The main unresolved concern was the loose 'beauty cover' above the frunk and windshield. Mitchell recounted his experience in the Cybertruck Owners Only Facebook group: "I took my Cybertruck into the service center here in Michigan for a few minor trim issues and two spots on the frunk and to get the camera area cleaned. The only thing I had an issue with was that they didn't replace the beauty cover with a new one. The Tesla advisor said he checked two or three other trucks in their shop, and they were all like that, and that the tech compared the original to a new part, and it was the same, so they just installed the original. So apparently that's acceptable to Tesla. Seems like a simple fix to put a gasket on there and make sure no infiltration is allowed in that area from the off-gassing."

According to the account, the loose cover allows airflow that carries volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the frunk cavity and dash area to the cool windshield glass. This can lead to condensation and fogging over the forward-facing Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) camera housing, posing a potential safety hazard by compromising visibility.

Other owners have reported similar experiences. John Lopez noted a gap on his truck but no rattle. Julian Colicchio said his cover became loose after service work on the door. Alexander Chen accepted the issue after seeing it on multiple vehicles during a free cleaning.

Broader Cybertruck challenges include persistent squeaks and rattles unresolved after multiple visits, a recall for cantrail trim detachment affecting nearly all delivered units, and extended service wait times of weeks or more. Owners are advised to document issues at delivery, emphasize functional impacts in service requests, and consider adding a gasket for sealing if needed. The article highlights these as growing pains for early models, urging vigilance on trim and seals.
