The official FIFA Fan Fest planned for Liberty State Park in New Jersey has been cancelled four months before the 2026 men's World Cup begins in June. The decision stems from policy changes under new Governor Mikie Sherrill, who is redirecting funds to smaller community events instead. Tickets for the event will be fully reimbursed.
The FIFA Fan Fest for the New York/New Jersey region, intended to host celebrations for all 104 matches of the 2026 men's World Cup, has been scrapped. Announced in February 2025 by Tammy Murphy, wife of then-Governor Phil Murphy and chair of the New York/New Jersey host committee board, the event was set for Liberty State Park in Jersey City. Planning had progressed for a year, with tickets already sold and ambitions to operate throughout the tournament. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection had even prepared by pausing picnic reservations and limiting park access from May to accommodate setup.
Under newly elected Governor Mikie Sherrill, who took office earlier this year, the project was abandoned as part of broader policy shifts. Instead, Sherrill announced $5 million in funding for initiatives to spread World Cup excitement across New Jersey through smaller watch parties and street fairs. Steve Sigmund, a spokesperson for the governor's office, stated: "The Jersey City venue is no longer being utilized. Instead, Governor Sherrill is creating a program to bring the excitement of the World Cup to communities throughout New Jersey. We’ll be working in close partnership with NJ EDA and the World Cup host committee in developing this program."
Sources familiar with the discussions noted that Sherrill's vision differed from her predecessors, leading to the cancellation despite Murphy's enthusiasm for a major event with views of New York City and the Statue of Liberty. Nathaniel Styer, spokesperson for Jersey City Mayor James Solomon, supported the move: "The Governor made the right call. It became increasingly clear that there was no workable, cost-effective way to manage the influx of tens of thousands of fans into Liberty State Park, while maintaining access to the members of the Jersey City community."
The cancellation highlights the significant burdens on host cities, including security costs potentially exceeding $1 million per day. FIFA's contracts required cities to fund and organize free Fan Fests, covering safety, medical services, and more, but many markets are scaling back. A spokesperson for the New York/New Jersey host committee confirmed ticket refunds via Ticketmaster within 14-21 days and outlined alternative plans, including fan zones at Rockefeller Center and the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens. The committee is exploring relocation options, likely in New York City, but not for the full tournament duration.
FIFA declined to comment on the matter.
