Nasa astronaut Sunita Williams retires after 27 years

Indian-origin Nasa astronaut Sunita Williams has retired after a 27-year career, during which she spent a record 608 days in space. Her final mission launched in 2024 aboard Boeing's Starliner capsule but extended over nine months due to technical issues. Nasa administrator Jared Isaacman described her as a trailblazer in human spaceflight.

Sunita Williams, a 60-year-old former Navy captain, has retired after 27 years at Nasa. The space agency announced the news on January 20, 2026, stating her retirement took effect at the end of December. Williams logged 608 days in space across three station missions and holds the record for the most spacewalking time by a woman: 62 hours over nine excursions.

Her final mission launched in 2024 with crewmate Butch Wilmore aboard Boeing's new Starliner crew capsule, intended to last just a week but extended to more than nine months due to Starliner troubles. In the end, they returned home last March with SpaceX. Wilmore left Nasa last summer.

Nasa's new administrator Jared Isaacman called her "a trailblazer in human spaceflight" in a statement. "Congratulations on your well-deserved retirement," he said.

Boeing's next Starliner mission will carry cargo—not people—to the space station later this year, ensuring all thruster and other issues are resolved before crewed flights.

NASA's Artemis II mission has advanced as its Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft arrived at Launch Pad 39B at Kennedy Space Center. The overnight rollout marks a crucial step toward the first crewed Artemis flight, set to orbit the Moon. Engineers now prepare for prelaunch tests ahead of sending four astronauts on a 10-day journey.

The US House Science, Space, and Technology Committee has approved an amendment to the NASA Reauthorization Act of 2026, directing the agency to study options for preserving the International Space Station in orbit after its planned 2030 retirement. Instead of deorbiting the station into the Pacific Ocean in 2031, the proposal calls for evaluating a safe orbital harbor. The measure received bipartisan support during the committee's markup session.

NASA's Artemis II crew, aboard the Orion spacecraft named Integrity, has successfully departed Earth's orbit and is heading toward the Moon after a key engine burn. The astronauts reported no major issues, shared stunning photos of Earth, and spoke with family and media. The mission remains on track for a closest approach to the Moon on Monday and splashdown on April 10.

NASA has overhauled its Artemis program, postponing the first human moon landing until the Artemis IV mission in early 2028. The changes, announced by Administrator Jared Isaacman on February 27, 2026, aim to increase launch frequency and reduce risks after repeated delays with the Space Launch System rocket. An additional test flight, now Artemis III, will focus on low-Earth orbit rendezvous with commercial lunar landers.
