South Korea supports Philippines' ASEAN hosting

South Korea has expressed support for the Philippines' hosting of the ASEAN Summit this year and its desire to boost ties with the region. Representatives from both countries discussed strengthening relations and expanding investments. They reaffirmed their commitment to bilateral ties ahead of the 77th anniversary of diplomatic relations in March.

In a statement from Malacañang, South Korean Ambassador Lee Sang-hwa expressed strong support for the Philippines' hosting of ASEAN meetings this year. This came during a meeting last Monday with Executive Secretary Ralph Recto.

"Ambassador Lee also conveyed strong support for the Philippines’ hosting of ASEAN meetings this year, noting South Korea’s keen interest in building stronger relations with the region," the statement read.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening bilateral ties as the two nations prepare to celebrate the 77th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations this March. Recto assured the envoy that the Philippine government is proactively addressing investor concerns to make the country a more competitive and secure investment destination.

Bilateral relations between Manila and Seoul began on March 3, 1949. During the Korean War, the Philippines sent an expeditionary force to Korea to help South Korea defend itself from invading forces from the North.

In 2024, the two countries upgraded their relations to a “strategic partnership” to strengthen ties that cover cooperation in various areas, including the economy and security. The region is viewed as a key global economic player and investment destination.
