Cubs activate reliever Phil Maton from injured list

The Chicago Cubs activated right-handed reliever Phil Maton from the 15-day injured list ahead of their series opener against the San Diego Padres. The move comes as the team's bullpen continues to battle multiple injuries. Chicago optioned left-hander Charlie Barnes to Triple-A Iowa to make room.

In San Diego, the Cubs received a boost to their beleaguered bullpen when they brought back Phil Maton, who had been sidelined since April 10 with right knee tendinitis. The 33-year-old, signed to a two-year deal in the offseason, last pitched on April 7 against the Rays, where he allowed two runs. Maton completed a rehab assignment with a scoreless inning for Iowa on Friday before rejoining the team in Los Angeles over the weekend. No restrictions apply to his usage, though manager Craig Counsell said the club will remain cautious with the knee issue. “Any time a guy’s off the injured list from a physical issue, you’re going to always be a little bit careful,” Counsell noted. Maton expressed optimism about his adjustments, stating, “I’m kind of hoping we addressed it now and we can focus on getting guys out for the rest of the year.” Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer acknowledged the bullpen's challenges despite strong overall play. “We’re playing very well, but at the same time, we’re also dealing with a real challenge from a bullpen standpoint,” Hoyer said. The unit still misses Daniel Palencia (left lat), Caleb Thielbar (left hamstring), Hunter Harvey (right triceps), Ethan Roberts (right middle finger) and Riley Martin (left elbow). Martin, who posted a 2.16 ERA in eight games, landed on the 15-day IL Sunday with elbow inflammation. Imaging revealed a flexor strain, sidelining him for about eight weeks. Counsell called it a significant loss but added a positive note: “For the positive side, we’re going to get him back. Any time you send somebody for elbow imaging, there’s worse news that can come from those things.”
