Daniel Vávra steps away from game development for movie project

Daniel Vávra, director of the Kingdom Come: Deliverance series, is leaving game development to lead a movie adaptation of the franchise, according to Warhorse Studios. The studio's boss clarified that Vávra remains involved with the company in a broader capacity. A draft script for the film has already been prepared, with negotiations ongoing with production firms.

Warhorse Studios announced that Daniel Vávra, known for directing the Kingdom Come: Deliverance games, will no longer focus on game development. Instead, he will spearhead the creation of a Kingdom Come movie, as confirmed by studio boss Martin Frývaldský to CzechCrunch on February 24, 2026.

Frývaldský addressed potential concerns about Vávra's departure, stating, “I’m sure people will wonder if this is some kind of breakup with Warhorse. No, on the contrary, Dan himself wanted to move on. He made three games that were a global success, and he has been wanting to try something different for a long time.” He emphasized Vávra's continued ties to the studio: “You won’t see him in the office every day anymore, but in a broader sense, he is still part of Warhorse.”

The project represents a transmedia expansion for the brand. Frývaldský noted, “Anyone who has played Kingdom Come or even Mafia will know Dan’s handwriting and can expect a strong story again.” He added that the film could succeed independently while complementing the games, given the franchise's growth.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, Warhorse's latest title, sold five million copies in its first year and earned nominations from The Game Awards, DICE, and BAFTA. An enhanced version launched earlier in February 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X. The original Kingdom Come: Deliverance sold eight million copies, enabling the studio to expand to over 250 employees. Warhorse was acquired by Embracer's Plaion in 2019.
