Over 2800 signatures demand referendum on roads in Leksand

More than 2800 signatures have been handed over to politicians in Leksand demanding a referendum on private roads. Initiator Peo Nordlöf (V) calls it fantastic that so many have signed. The issue has been debated for years in the municipality.

On Tuesday, more than 2800 signatures were handed over to Leksand politicians. The demand is a referendum on responsibility for maintenance of private roads in the municipality. "It feels fantastic that so many have signed," says Peo Nordlöf (V), one of those behind the collection.

The road issue has been debated for many years. In 2022, the municipal council decided to shift responsibility for road investments from the municipality to property owners in the villages. Discussions continue on municipal support to road associations.

Leksand's Väggruppen wants residents to vote on incorporating private roads within and between villages into municipal maintenance via rules and agreements. Municipal chairman Sebastian Larsson (M) has not responded to SVT Dalarna but told P4 Dalarna in late February: "Fundamentally, private roads are the responsibility of property owners. Leksand municipality has taken a very large responsibility for these roads for 50 years, not least financially. But with that said, we still have a very large bag of money from the municipality."

Over 1300 signatures are needed for the council to consider a referendum, a threshold now exceeded. An advisory referendum will be held unless two-thirds of members vote against it.
