PKR: people's sovereignty must become real practice, not just political jargon

Chairman of the People's Sovereignty Party (PKR), Tuntas Subagyo, highlights Indonesia's sovereignty issues amid globalization. He assesses that sovereignty often reduces to mere political jargon, while control over the economy and natural resources drifts away from the people.

Jakarta – On Wednesday, January 7, 2026, PKR Chairman Tuntas Subagyo shared his views on Indonesia's sovereignty eroded by globalization. According to him, although Indonesia is rich in natural resources, real control over the economy, energy, natural wealth, and development direction is increasingly distant from the people's hands.

"The main problem of this nation is not merely economic growth, but who holds sovereignty over the results of that growth," stated Tuntas Subagyo in his remarks. He emphasized that as long as development benefits are enjoyed only by a handful of Jakarta elites and conglomerates, social justice will remain a utopia.

Subagyo also criticized the concerning state of national economic and energy sovereignty. Indonesia faces a paradox where natural resources abound, but their added value is enjoyed by others. "Natural wealth like mines, forests, and seas that should support the people's welfare has instead been systematically plundered for decades," he added.

He called for the state to return to its constitutional mandate to manage national wealth for the prosperity of all Indonesians. Development must be realigned with constitutional principles through political courage that positions the people as the rightful owners of the country. As Prof. Tuntas Subagyo, he stressed the need for a paradigm shift in governance where people's sovereignty is an absolute prerequisite for a just and prosperous Indonesia.

"It is time to redefine national sovereignty not as a symbol, but as real practice," he concluded.
