Taal Volcano records increased seismic activity and eruptions

Taal Volcano in Batangas province registered 10 volcanic earthquakes and two short-lived phreatomagmatic eruptions over the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported on Wednesday.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the volcano also experienced four episodes of volcanic tremor lasting between one and 129 minutes on Tuesday. This marked an increase from the previous day when only single-digit seismic events occurred.

The two phreatomagmatic eruptions took place at 2:29 p.m. and 8:09 p.m. on July 21, lasting three and four minutes respectively. Taal has now recorded five such eruptions in July, following earlier events on July 12, 16, and 17.

The volcano emitted 129 metric tons of sulfur dioxide during the monitoring period, with a voluminous plume rising to 2,800 meters. No volcanic smog or upwelling of hot fluids was observed. Taal remains under Alert Level 1, indicating low-level unrest.
