Taal Volcano seismic activity declines but continues

PHIVOLCS reported on July 24 that Taal Volcano recorded 31 volcanic earthquakes and an ongoing tremor since July 23, down from higher activity the prior day.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said overall seismic activity at Taal Volcano in Batangas province declined over the past 24 hours. It recorded 31 volcanic earthquakes along with a volcanic tremor that began at 5:42 a.m. on July 23.

PHIVOLCS measured 741 metric tons of sulfur dioxide emitted from the main crater, with the plume rising 759 meters and drifting southeast. No upwelling of hot fluids occurred in the Main Crater Lake, and no volcanic smog was observed.

The volcano stays at Alert Level 1, which signals low-level unrest. The agency noted that this level means the volcano remains in an abnormal state and that hazardous eruptions cannot be ruled out.
