Taylor Swift defeats copyright lawsuit over song lyrics

A federal judge has dismissed a copyright infringement lawsuit filed against Taylor Swift by a self-published Florida poet. The ruling came Monday in a case that claimed the singer lifted ideas from poems for multiple songs and videos.

U.S. District Judge Aileen M. Cannon issued a 10-page order permanently ending the suit brought by Kimberly Marasco. The judge ruled that the claims involved basic ideas and metaphors not protected by copyright law.

Marasco had alleged that Swift's song The Man copied lines and themes from her poem Ordinary Citizen. She also pointed to similarities between her work Elon=MC2 and Swift's Mastermind, along with ownership claims over images like golden leaves.

Marasco said she disagrees with the decision and plans to appeal. Swift's attorney called the lawsuit frivolous and harassing in court filings.

This marks the second time a similar complaint from Marasco was dismissed. Her first suit, filed in 2024, was rejected with prejudice last year.
