Telekom defends copper network in Darmstadt lab

Deutsche Telekom continues to rely on its old copper network for Germany's digitalization. In a 1949 cellar lab in Darmstadt, manager Clemens Sieben presented the plans and emphasized the performance of the existing infrastructure.

Deutsche Telekom recently invited guests to a presentation in a historic lab in western Darmstadt. There, old cables in yellow, red and green still hang from the ceiling as manager Clemens Sieben highlighted the advantages of the copper network.

Sieben, responsible for customer quality of broadband technologies, said: "Fiber is the best technology. But the existing copper network of Telekom provides good services, we should not shut it off without necessity." He sees it as a practical solution for the transition.

Critics accuse the company of preserving Germany's digital lag with this approach. Resistance to the plans is now growing in Berlin as well.
