El Chapo lawyer denies authorship of letters sent to US court

Lawyer Gerardo Martín Rincón stated that letters attributed to Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán sent to the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York are fake.

Rincón explained that none of the letters come from his client due to the strict maximum-security regime at ADX Florence prison in Colorado. He noted that any document must pass through filters from US authorities and the FBI, a process that takes months.

The litigator pointed out that Guzmán does not speak or write English and has difficulties expressing himself even in Spanish. He said he knows his client's signature and handwriting, so he ruled out the authenticity of the documents received.

More than twenty letters have reached Judge Brian Cogan, some sent from Mississippi and written in English. The judge has rejected them for lack of legal basis. Rincón said he has already reported the case to attorney Mariel Colón and the court, where the origin of the writings is under investigation.
