Termodynamik får matematisk stringens genom mätteori

En fysiker har föreslagit att termodynamikens grunder bör byggas om med hjälp av mätteori, ett matematiskt ramverk från kvantfältsteorin. Metoden syftar till att adressera långvariga brister i precisionen hos den 200 år gamla teorin. Förslaget presenterades vid en konferens i juni.

Bryan Roberts från London School of Economics and Political Science presenterade metoden vid konferensen Foundations of Physics i Irvine, Kalifornien, den 16 juni. Arbetet drar nytta av mätteori för att separera observerbara storheter som arbete från dolda storheter som värme, och mappar dessa till distinkta matematiska rum. Roberts menar att denna geometriska struktur gör det möjligt att definiera temperatur och entropi mer rigoröst. Det skulle kunna tillämpas på system från motorer till svarta hål. Preliminära experiment med molekylära kopplingar antyder möjliga kopplingar till fenomen som Aharonov-Bohm-effekten. Lucas Céleri från Federal University of Goiás kallade idén kompletterande till insatser inom kvanttermodynamik. Han noterade att mätteori även kan bidra till att förena termodynamik med speciell relativitetsteori.
