Montana Cybertruck owner gets new battery after 40,000 miles

A Tesla Cybertruck owner from Montana was surprised to receive a brand-new battery pack after just 40,000 miles on his vehicle. The replacement occurred during a routine service, despite the battery showing only six percent degradation. The owner suspects it may be part of a silent recall related to cell dents discovered last year.

The owner, who has a low VIN Cybertruck, shared his experience on the Cybertruck Owners Club Forum. Back in April, his vehicle was scheduled for service due to a minor issue with the retractable cover. The service plan also included a battery pack replacement, but the owner deferred it ahead of a long trip, with Tesla agreeing it was fine to wait.

In December 2025, he finally brought the truck in and learned the battery replacement was still on the agenda, even after accumulating only 40,000 miles. "Pretty awesome," the owner described the early replacement, praising Tesla for their flexibility in scheduling. The original battery exhibited around six percent degradation—better than what he observed in his Model 3 and Model Y at similar mileage points.

Tesla's Cybertruck battery warranty covers eight years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first, guaranteeing at least 70 percent capacity retention. The company has stated that owners "almost never have to replace the battery" in their vehicles. However, this case bucks that trend.

The owner theorizes the swap stems from a "silent recall for cell dents." Last year, Tesla identified dents in some Cybertruck battery cells and began shipping affected packs back to the Gigafactory in Texas for replacement. He did not receive an official recall notice.

This is not an isolated incident. In July, another owner named Ferrara visited Tesla for a faulty wireless charger and ended up with a new battery. Tesla kept the old one for "engineering research purposes," leaving Ferrara perplexed and concerned about potential undisclosed issues.

The Cybertruck's development timeline includes its prototype unveiling in November 2019, repeated production delays, and serial production starting in November 2023 at Gigafactory Texas.

Tesla has restarted production of Model Y vehicles equipped with its in-house 4680 battery cells in the US, more than two years after halting to prioritize the Cybertruck. Weak Cybertruck sales and tariff-related supply chain issues prompted the shift, with new non-structural packs improving repairability. The move was announced in Tesla's Q4 2025 shareholder update.

Tesla's Cybertruck faced multiple recalls throughout 2025, affecting more than 115,000 vehicles according to filings with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. These issues ranged from exterior trim detachment to software glitches and accessory failures. The recalls highlight ongoing challenges in the model's production rollout.

A Cybertruck owner in California secured a full repurchase from Tesla after multiple repairs, including a motor and suspension replacement. The owner then repurchased the same model at a discount with added perks. The case highlights the ease of invoking the state's consumer protection laws without legal battles.

Leading battery-electric pickup trucks from Tesla, Ford, and Rivian faced significant sales declines and production pauses in 2025, despite a rush of EV deliveries before federal tax subsidies ended. The Tesla Cybertruck, Ford F-150 Lightning, and Rivian R1T accounted for much of the segment's challenges, with low volumes raising questions about their viability heading into 2026. While Tesla's Model Y set sales records, the pickup models highlighted broader market hurdles for electric trucks.

Tesla has issued its tenth recall for the Cybertruck, affecting 6,197 Foundation Series models from 2024 due to an optional off-road LED lightbar that may detach from the windshield. The issue stems from improper adhesive installation at service centers, leading to over 600 warranty claims. No crashes, injuries, or fatalities have been reported.

Tesla is recalling 63,619 Cybertruck vehicles in the U.S. due to software that causes the front parking lights to shine too brightly, potentially distracting oncoming drivers and increasing crash risk. The issue affects nearly all Cybertrucks built since production began, with a free over-the-air software update available to fix it. No collisions, injuries or fatalities have been reported related to the defect.
